PALM SPRINGS, CA—(Marketwired – April 11, 2016) – TORRID, America's fastest growing plus–size fashion brand, hosted an exclusive pool party this weekend at The Commune at Ace Hotel Palm Springs. The event drew plus size tastemakers and Torrid customers from across Southern California to celebrate their bodies and kick off swimsuit season.
Attendees included influential plus size fashion bloggers Gabi Gregg and Nicole Simone, and Runner Magazine cover girl Erica Jean Schenk. Also present were Torrid brand ambassadors Philomena Kwao, Georgina Burke and Lyanna Lynette, the Face of Torrid 2016, as well as Torrid customers and employees featured in the windows of Torrid stores as part of its #OwnIt swimwear campaign.
Lisa Stanley, VP of Marketing, also in attendance, remarked, “It's so great to see all these gorgeous, curvy girls around the pool today. They deserve this. We're here to have fun and empower them to get into a sexy Torrid swimsuit. One–pieces, bikinis, retro chic glamor… there's something for everyone. It's all about owning it.”
As guests arrived they were greeted with margaritas and swag bags filled with goodies like sunglasses and a Torrid beach towel. They were then invited into The CommuneÂ pavilion where a pop–up shop showcased Torrid's swim collection. Over 70 items — from bikinis and one–pieces, to swim cover–ups, sandals and sunglasses — took center stage. The space was styled to match the venue's mid–century, desert aesthetic with southwest–inspired rugs, kitschy furniture and a vintage airstream trailer.
Liz MuÃ±oz, Torrid SVP of Design, said, “This truly is a breakout year for us in swim. We threw out all the misconceptions about plus size swimwear and designed the most beautiful, fashionable suits we could imagine. The suits our girl always dreamed of wearing but never found. Then we engineered them so they would fit her body, hug and flatter her curves, and we made sure she could walk around and swim in them confidently.
“One of the biggest trends in swimwear this year is high waisted bottoms, which are one of the most flattering silhouettes for our customer. The key is having an amazing fit, which sets us apart from other plus size swim brands. We incorporated other trends like mesh, caging, multi–straps, cutout detailing and peplum styling, which add a young, sexy, element to our swim collection.”
Between swimming and relaxing poolside in lounge chairs, partygoers mingled over cocktails and a taco buffet. They snapped selfies at a photo kiosk that instantly uploaded their pics to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Tarot card and palm readers offered a glimpse of the future and, just in time for festival season, a braid bar was stationed near the pool. Philomena Kwao and Lyanna Lynette took turns taking over Torrid's Snapchat, while Georgina Burke snapped and handed out Polaroids to guests. DJ Mamabear's mix of funk, soul and Top 40 kept the dance party going all day long.
The finale was a big group shot in front of the pool to commemorate the day's revelry. Every girl had her moment in the sun and Torrid proved, once again, that sexy has no size.
